    Twitter is a social networking service where the users are allowed to post and interact with messages called “tweets.” One needs to register to post tweets on the site; the unregistered users can only read the tweets sent by the registered users. Twitter can be accessed through the website interface, mobile app, and SMS. Twitter was launched in the year 2006 by Jack Dorsey, Noah Glass, Biz Stone, and Evan Williams and is based in San Francisco, California. It gained more popularity in 2012 and the year 2013 it became one of the most visited websites in the world. Twitter is often known as “the SMS of the internet.”


    The following are some of the top things you need to know about Twitter:

    The First tweet:

    The very first tweet was tweeted by Jack Dorsey who is one of the creators of the service. The tweet was sent out on March 21, 2006.  Jack tweeted saying “just setting up my twttr.” The first tweet from space was from Mike Massimino in the year 2009; he tweeted “From orbit: Launch was awesome!! I am feeling great, working hard, & enjoying the magnificent views, the adventure of a lifetime has begun!”

    Most followed user:

    The American singer and songwriter are one of the most followed users on Twitter, and she has about 49 million followers. The second most followed user is Justin Bieber who is nearing Kay Perry with approximately 48,149,721 followers. Some of the most followed brands are YouTube and Instagram.

    Twitter had rejected an offer from FaceBook:

    FaceBook had offered to buy Twitter for $500 million in the year 2008. Twitter had only 6 million registered users in 2008, but still, it rejected the offer by FaceBook as they believed that the service had more potential. In the year 2013, Twitter gained so much popularity that it had about 232 million users and the site was worth nearly 30 billion dollars.

    Twitter’s icon Larry:

    The iconic bird is named Larry, and it was named after the Boston Celtic great Larry Bird. Since both the co-founders were from Boston, it is thought that they might have called it after that bird.

    U.S Government and Twitter:

    Twitter has grown so much and has a significant impact on many people’s life. The U.S Government realized the global impact of Twitter, and in the year 2009, the Government had requested Twitter to delay a planned system upgrade which would disrupt a daytime service in Iran. Twitter compiled to the request, and the update was postponed.

    Gaining popularity:

    Twitter started with just a few accounts back in 2006, and it has grown so much and currently has about 310 million users.  An average of 460,000 twitter accounts is created every day.

    Event with most tweet per second:

    On August 2013, the animated film ‘Castle in the Sky’ in Japan had the most number of tweets per second. The most number of tweets per minute occurred in the year 2013 when the MTV video awards were being given.
